Order of the WEB 5

“Tha- that’s my sister… Esi” I managed to say with Esi’s foot pressing on my head.
“Like I said; FAMILY BUSINESS.” Esi added. There was a sudden loud crack as a pair of stone hands rose from the ground and grabbed AJ’s ankles.
Tension filled the waiting room; everyone watched the standoff wide eyed. I slowly regained my bearings after being able to talk, though Esi still pressed on my head with her foot. Now that I was fully aware of myself I was getting annoyed. This was demeaning.
Easy there Kid. I can feel all that anger welling up; be careful you don’t slip. Remember what the examiner said. There will be more situations like these. Kram said, trying to keep me level headed; he was right, but I was still angry regardless. I couldn’t let this end this way.
I watched from where I was lying; AJ’s eyes were glistening white again. She was really getting into this. She looked at me, finally making eye contact. Good! I looked at her bolts of lightning and at the stone hands grabbing her; hoping she will get the message. A quick smile flashed on her face. She seemed to have gotten the message. If I was going to move, I had to be fast.
“Your move.” Esi said.
“Exactly shorty.” AJ responded. She released a concentrated charge of electricity from her feet, causing the stone hands to crumble. “Sorry guys!” She shouted as it rained down bolts of lightning, there was chaos everywhere. I felt her feet move in an attempt to avoid AJ’s lightning bolt, perfect time to make my move.
Vitesse!
I felt myself get lighter as I ran up the tall wall. There was familiar flash of red light from my right. She was coming for me. The light disappeared as Esi appeared from above me, running down towards me. I knew I would lose in a test of strength, even with the help of Kram, I had to use my speed.
“You think you’re faster than me?” A very familiar voice said from behind me. Esi was no more in my line of sight. Wait- when did she?
I jumped out of the way just in time to avoid a punch that could probably have killed me. There was a loud crashing sound as her fist connected with the wall. I watched in total shock as the tall wall started crumbling down. It rained huge chunks of debris. What was this girl? And what was with that speed?
“You don’t have time to be distracted, with that sorry excuse of Vitesse.” She added; appearing out of nowhere right in front of me mid-air.
Her braided hair fluttered around her; she looked even more intent on killing me, and far deadlier than I had expected. There was nothing I could do in my position now; she had me just where she wanted; there was nowhere to run, her Vitesse was at least at Mach speed unlke mine.
“I wish I could say this has been fun.” She added
Kram, I’m sorry, but I’m dead if I don’t use you.
I agree kid; guess we couldn’t hold out till Stage Three. I felt a hot sensation begin to burn through me.
Right before Esi’s kick could connect and before I could summon Kram’s strength, I felt time stop. We were mid-air, her foot only centimetres away from my temple. What was going on? What was that?
That is Tumi. Kram said answering my question. And how was Kram still able to communicate with me?
“NOT IN MY HOUSE!” A loud voice resounded through the room; shaking the walls that still stood. Time resumed and we were sent crushing into the ground. My body felt extremely heavy, I could barely move; it was as though gravity was fighting against me; I noticed Ato and AJ on the ground as well, they seemed to be trying to move too, but with no success. The debris from the wall that Esi had brought down, all floated into the sky, the wall began to rebuild itself. What was going on? Who was doing this?
“Every now and then, we get candidates who get too excited and go on rampage even when a test isn’t going on” I saw Twum enter from one of the doors. He looked angry. “I can’t stand arrogant candidates like that; especially those who end up causing damage.” He shot a look at Esi, who looked uninterested in what the examiner was saying.
“You are all lucky today is my mother’s birthday, and I promised her not to shed any blood on her day. Otherwise, all six of you would be corpses this instant.” The weight increased, the ground beneath us cracked. So this is what an examiner was capable of? He hadn’t even lifted a finger the whole time.
“I will not apologise for my actions.” Esi said. From where she stood. Wait! When did she get up? The examiner didn’t look surprised though; he probably had released her from whatever he was doing to hold us down. She started walking away from the rest of us. She looked back at the examiner; a blank look on her face. “But if you ever interrupt me, or threaten me again; I will kill you myself.”
The examiner smiled at her. She walked into the crowd of spectators leaving her teammates behind. The examiner turned his attention to the rest of us, let out a loud sigh and released his hold on us.
“One more riot from you lot, and you’ll all be disqualified from this exam.” He warned waving us off.
“TO EVERY CANDIDATE PRESENT; this room you’re in was built by the Exam Board to provide you with whatever you need; within reasonable context of course. The doors spread across this room will lead to whatever you’ll need to make your wait here worthwhile; once again within reasonable context. Enjoy your stay.” The examiner announced. His voice had a way of filling the entire room. He gave me a look that clearly read “BE CAREFUL”, and walked back from where he came.
Esi’s teammates walked into the crowds towards where she had gone.
“See you in the next round kakra; I really hope to see how well your training has been going.” The swordsman who looked exactly like Ato said, disappearing into the crowd behind the bandaged one. I hadn’t noticed the resemblance from where I had been on the floor.
“Kakra?” AJ stared at Ato. “You are a twin? Wow. The resemblance is uncanny.” She hovered around him annoyingly like a fly. “I think he’s slightly taller though. And a little more handsome.”
“I will cut you down.” Ato warned, which was useless as AJ kept prodding as we found a place to rest far away from most of the crowd and Esi and her team.
AJ tended to my broken arm, which I had forgotten about in all the excitement. It had already started healing which surprised her. She smiled knowingly and took a seat between Ato and I. She probably figured it was because of Kram that I was healing this fast, and she was right.
You’ve got to get stronger kid. Kram said after a while.
I know. I can’t stand this! Every time I feel I’ve gotten good enough; something needs to happen to prove otherwise. I responded in frustration. I mean I know I’m at least above average-
And unless you stop comparing yourself to the average people, you won’t get strong enough to finish this entire test, not to mention become a Story Teller! So you’d better stop complaining and put in the extra work.
Kram was right, if I wanted to become a Story Teller I had to get stronger and even surpass both my masters. Actually thinking about it seemed impossible, but that was what it took to be worthy of the title Story Teller.
“What do you guys want to become?” I asked staring into space. “Why are you taking the test? I mean I am taking this test to become a Story Teller like my father. I never really met him, apparently he died before I was even born; though I heard he was one of the strongest ever; you know, since the Spider himself. Yet somehow no one seems to know him. Hell, I don’t even know his name.”
I took of the red cap which I was wearing and inspected it. It had belonged to him when he was alive; according to master, he had been asked by my father to give it to me before I took the test. I never knew how true that story was; but two things I knew for sure, first, that my father was dead; and second, from what the examiner had said, this cap truly did belong to my father.
“How did he die?” Ato asked. AJ shocked him with a bit of her lightning. “Easy, I just wanted to know.”
“It’s okay.” I reassured AJ. “Well, I’ve never heard the full story of how he died; but I know who killed him and why”
“Well, I’m taking this test to become an Elder. Hopefully the youngest ever.” AJ said. She created a miniature cluster of lightning in her palm. “My family after seeing my power insisted I become a witch doctor or contend for the seat of one of the SIX KINGS OF THE SOUTH. Can you imagine that? A female king; would be the first ever down here.”
“So why elder?” I asked.
“Despite the power of the kings or the witch doctors, I believe the Elders are the most politically powerful in the rankings. Who makes a king? Who breaks a king? Who tells the king when to seek the council of the witch doctor, and whether or not to heed it? If the king controls the people, who controls the king?” The cluster of lighting in her palm crackled wildly. I honestly thought she was going to say something more inspiring, and less devious. She shut her palm, causing the electric show to end. She let out a sigh and smiled.
“And I’m guessing you want to be a knight?” I asked Ato, who just looked at me and shook his head. He didn’t talk after and just closed his eyes. He really didn’t like talking about himself did he?
“So, what’s up with your sister?” AJ asked. Her question caught Ato’s attention, who’s eyes fluttered open. “Why does she hate your guts that much? I mean she literally tried to kill you.”
Telling them about my sister meant telling them everything, which really wasn’t much. Considering we had just met, I wasn’t sure what to do. However, the fact that they had partnered with me meant their lives were now in as much danger as mine. According to the message from master, anyone found assisting me was also a target. They deserved to know.
“Honestly, as to why exactly, I don’t know? I’m still not sure if she really is my sister to be honest. I can’t tell you everything right now, but I can tell you this. Esi is not the only threat; she wants me dead for her own personal reasons I’m assuming. But there’s another person who wants me dead. Someone very powerful, who knows very powerful people. He has put a bounty on my head; and some candidates in this exam are aiming for that bounty.” AJ and Ato looked at me intently, completely attentive to what I was telling them. “The reason why I’m telling you this is because anyone caught helping or assisting me automatically becomes a target. I am sorry, but that’s all I can say right now.”
They were both just silent staring at me. Probably wondering whether I had lost my mind.
“I will understand if you want to end this partnership.” I added. “After all, none of you signed up for this.”
“You are right; we have no ties whatsoever with you.” AJ responded. “But we already helped you once, so now we are both targets. Next time mention this earlier you idiot.” She smacked me up my head. “I also haven’t seen it yet; the main reason why I partnered you; so I don’t have much of an option” She winked at me. I hated when she did that, it made me feel as if she could see right through me and even see Kram.
“She’s right about already being targets” Ato added. “Plus hanging around you means I get to meet more worthy opponents and probably Ato, again.”
We both looked at him as he mentioned his twin brother, expecting him to say more. Which he predictably didn’t.
“But you do know unless you learn how to use Tumi, the next rounds of the first stage are just going to be that much harder right?” AJ pointed out. “All of her teammates can use Tumi including your sister. And from what I saw you were useless in that fight; I won’t even call it a fight, she was a boxer and you were a punching bag.”
AJ was right. Esi was way out of my league; she was as strong as AJ and stronger than Ato. I absolutely had no chance of survival if I was to meet her in a fight.
“Maybe if you knew how to use Tumi, you could have defended yourself better.” I looked at AJ wide-eyed. What did she mean by defended myself? Was she also underestimating me? I knew Esi was stronger than me; but I’m certain if I could also use Tumi, I could land a hit or two.
“Why are you giving me that look?” She asked, a confused look on her face. “Wait, don’t tell me you actually believe that you could land a hit on that short girl.”
“If I knew Tumi, I prob-“ She cut me off before I could finish.
“You think so?” She asked again.
“Yes. I do. After all if it wasn’t for the Tumi she us-“ Before I could finish Ato was standing in front of me. The back of his sword pressed against my throat. How did he do that?!
“This is what the lowest form of Tumi looks like.” He said, looking me dead in the eyes. “You would be dead by now if someone who knew Tumi wanted you dead.”
“What are you trying to say? That she didn’t want me dead?” I managed to ask as the sword pressed harder.
“Not just that. I didn’t sense an ounce of Tumi when she was fighting you.” He said, his sword disappearing back to wherever it came from. “She nearly killed you with just her raw strength.”
I couldn’t move. Was I this stupid? Did I honestly for a second think I could fight Esi? Was I this weak?
“He is right. I hate to say this, trust me; but I don’t think even if both Ato and I attacked that girl seriously we would survive.” AJ added. As if reality wasn’t harsh enough.
Was the gap between Esi and I this much?
Are you seriously going to sit around mopping? Kid, your mother would be ashamed of you right now. Her son… looking like this? You’d better snap out of it? First of all, have you forgotten what I’m capable of? Secondly, if you really want to be stronger on your own, without using me, do you think sitting down and mopping about it is going to change anything? If you hate it so much; do something about it!
Kram was right. I wanted to get stronger on my own; not just rely on him. I needed to get stronger if I truly wanted to become a Story Teller. I needed to get better.
“Teach me.” I muttered
AJ and Ato both turned to stare at me.
“What was that?” AJ asked
“Did the beating make you retarded or something?” Ato added.
“Teach me how to use Tumi.” I said louder this time.
Now we are getting somewhere.

In the examiner’s office…
“Candidates just keep getting troublesome and more difficult to handle as the years pass by!” He complained throwing himself on the couch that seemed to be the only furniture in the wide room. The ceiling above him looked like a huge monitor showing the waiting room; and each room that the candidates accessed. He looked up at the screen ceiling above him letting out a loud sigh. “I’m getting too old for this shit.”
He looked down in time to see a spear ran him into the wall behind with a loud explosion. Slowly the dust filled room cleared up to reveal the examiner holding a spear which seemed to be made out of just plasma energy. It was inches away from his heart. He shattered the spear and stood from his seat.
“Adehye… very interesting; I will know that move anywhere. It has gotten surprisingly sharper I must admit. It could have easily killed me.” Twum said, dusting off his clothes. He looked back to see the damage. “Oh Come On! I just finished rebuilding that after the last time you showed up here!”
“Well if it had killed you then I’d know for certain it wasn’t you.” A voice responded, that of a woman. A figure appeared out of a dark corner in a long black hood. Her face was completely hidden by the darkness. “And, sorry about the wall.”
“Yeah, I’d prefer a cheque.” Twum replied. “I thought it wasn’t safe for you to be moving around this much. Why are you here; it’s not like anything has happened.”
“Well, I have gained additional inside help; a very reliable one...” Her words trailed off as she looked at the monitor. “Are those his teammates?”
“Yeah; they seem very strong; especially that girl. She reminds me of Akosua.” Twum said sitting back in his couch.
“That strong?” The woman asked; surprise in her voice.
“Yup. I’ve seen what she’s capable of.”
“Interesting. Anyway I have something important to tell you; that’s why I’m here.”
“You think that is interesting? You should see Akosua’s daughter.” Twum said with a snicker.
“Esi?” The woman asked. “You already knew how strong that girl is; it’s remarkable really”
“Strong?” Twum guffawed. “Strong is an understatement; she is a monster. I give her ten years- no, make that five years and she will be either as strong as you or even stronger?”
“What do you mean?”
“That kid broke free from my Tumi hold; Asaase. I might not have used the strongest hold. But she still did.”
“I’m honestly not surprised; she is a prodigy at manipulating Tumi” The woman said. “Just like her mother.”
“You see, that’s where it gets interesting. She didn’t use an ounce of Tumi” Twum said crossing his leg.
“What?! That is not possible”
“Exactly what I thought.”

Somewhere behind one of the doors in the waiting room…
My heart was beating so loudly I could barely hear myself think. I could barely see out of my left eye too, as a mixture of blood and sweat trickled down my forehead, some seeping into my eye. I tried to catch my breath; a simple task that seemed almost impossible in my current state. I felt as though I had climbed up Mt Afadjato and had been kicked to the bottom. Every part of me ached and screamed in pain.
Ato stood in front of me; he had barely broken a sweat. His katana blade disappeared into thin air. He looked at me and nodded. I watched as he walked to the other end of the room.
AJ clapped from where she sat. She had a wide grin on her face a she stood up and walked towards me.
“See, I knew my idea would work.” She said loudly.
“Congratulations Nana.” She said tapping me on the shoulder. It took everything I had to just stand up right now, and her tapping me wasn’t making it any easier. “You’ve finally attained Tumi; though I must admit, I’ve never seen Tumi manifest in this form before.”

To be continued…

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Hey everyone! Hope you’re all doing well. This week has been a busy one I must confess; and due to that it has been extra hard to work on this chapter of Order of the WEB. I have a script that needs to be presented by tomorrow and one on Monday. So It has been extra challenging to find time to work on this chapter; not to mention how tired I’ve been this week. It’s like the holidays are now taking a toll on me. Not to mention I resume school tomorrow. Yup, meaning I’m going to be extra busy from now on; in other words, I won’t be able to post as frequently as I have been doing these past few weeks. Rest assured, I will still keep bringing you more Order of the WEB, just not as frequently.
I intentionally made this chapter slightly lengthy as a way of saying, “I hope this makes up for future brownings.”. I must say this chapter was difficult to write! I had a real tough time. I did enjoy some moments of the story, as we do get to know more about our characters, especially our MC. We also meet a new mystery character. I know you have a lot of questions and so would I. I encourage you to ask them; but do find assurance in the fact that all will be revealed in due time…Scout’s honour. In the next chapter, we will be learning more about Tumi; and also, Round 2 will be starting. I can’t wait to show you what the test is. Probably the most original concept I’ve ever had…yet.
P.S. ESI THOUGH!!!!!!KWER!!! MY VERY OWN OP CHARACTER!!!

…winging it…

Yours Faithfully,

Order of the WEB 4

We hadn’t sensed him. We still couldn’t really put a finger on it; it was like he was both there and not there at the same time. AJ seemed to be on her guard, but there was no lightning; I wasn’t used to seeing her without sparks of electricity dancing around her. I looked at the guy before us and I couldn’t help but feel uneasy.
What do you think Kram?
No idea kid, one thing I’ve learnt being around you humans; you are full of surprises. He responded.
“I was waiting on a worthy opponent; and I seem to have found two.” He said with a stern and straight expression. “Let’s not waste any more time. Arsenal.”
A traditional Japanese Katana materialized in his left hand from thin air, it had an unusual golden blade, with a black hilt, clearly not formed in this land or any neighbouring one to be exact. How did he have a foreign weapon? He was probably from a rich family of sorts, that was the only logical explanation.
We stood there waiting for him to charge at us, but instead he just walked at us casually, then it happened, he was standing right between AJ and I; it was like one moment he was at least ten paces away from us, and the next he was between us. It didn’t feel like speed; and it was definitely not Vitesse. I tried to move away, but then something else happened, it was as if he was everywhere; his presence flooded my senses rendering me paralysed. From the corner of my eye I could see that AJ wasn’t moving either. I tried calling Kram but I couldn’t hear him or feel his presence at all.
“I’m sorry, I honestly expected more, but this ends here.”
Just as he was about to swing his sword; a familiar sound resounded very close to me. I watched him jump back, avoiding AJ’s lightning strike by seconds.
Kid! Kid! Can you hear me? Are you alright.
Kram! I could hear him now.
What the hell happened? Why did you not respond earlier? He asked, he sounded agitated.
I have no idea, but that guy did something, and whatever he did made me unable to hear your voice. I explained.
You see what I meant by full of surprises? He added.
I was finally able to move again.
“Are you okay?” AJ asked, looking at me with a raised eyebrow.
“Yeah, just a little surprised that’s all” I replied.
“Same here. I never expected a candidate to be this good at manipulating Tumi.” She said, staring intently at our mystery swordsman who seemed to be inspecting a singed part of his clothing.
“Tumi?”
Tumi! Of course, it’s been so long since I experienced something like this. But it’s definitely Tumi.
“I thought no candidate was supposed to be able to use Tumi.” I pointed out.
“You’re wrong.” The swordsman interrupted. “That is not the rule, the rule is; no arena is supposed to train an exam candidate to use Tumi. Since they think most candidates from the arena are too inexperienced to learn how to use or manipulate Tumi. In order words any certified master with no ties to an arena, can teach it to any candidate outside the arena.”
“Exactly like he said; why? Don’t tell me you can’t use Tumi?” AJ looked at me in disbelief. “You know Vitesse, but can’t use Tumi?” She blurted at me in a hushed tone.
“It’s a long story.” I replied.
“Fine, then I guess I’ll handle this; we will have a long chat after this young man.” She jabbed me with her elbow and walked towards her opponent.
As she walked towards him a halo made out of electricity formed around her head. I had not seen that before.
“Hey you!” She called to him. I had a weird sense of deja vu. “Let’s strike a deal.”
“I’m lis-“ She cut him off before he could even finish.
“We are going to use our strongest moves, if you take me down; you can have my cowries, and fight that useless bag of talent over there.” I honestly didn’t know whether to take that as a compliment or be offended.
“Sounds fair.” He said, his katana disappearing into thin air. “What’s the catch?”
“If I take you down, you will not fight us again, and, you will form an indefinite alliance with us.” She replied.
“Sounds fair too.” He responded without hesitation. “Too bad it’s not fair to you. Arsenal; All the King’s Men.”
Another sword began materializing in his left hand. A sword with an expanding dark blade, and a round golden hilt materialized fully in his hand. That wasn’t possible. It couldn’t be real, but the Adinkra symbols on the blade proved its authenticity.
Who the hell is this kid? And how does he own a Royal Sword?! Kram seemed to be in as much shock as I was. I couldn’t see AJ’s face from where I was standing, but I was sure even she was shocked as her electrical halo started whirring round at a dangerous speed; letting off spark after spark.
“How did you get that?” She asked in an uncomfortably calm voice I hadn’t heard before.
“That is none of your concern; strongest move right?” He said, tightening his grip on the hilt of the sword.
“Fine, I guess I’ll just have to beat it out of you.” She replied. I still couldn’t see her face; but I could tell she was angry. Why? Why was she angry?
Pay attention kid, you might learn something new.

A few moments later…
I watched in disbelief as the swordsman walked towards me; still holding the Royal Sword. How was that even possible. My eyes still couldn’t believe what they had just seen. I could feel it; was Kram scared? Only two people had ever gotten Kram this way, Esi and the figure from my dream; to think I’d meet a third this soon.
Kid. I think we found a monster as deadly as your sister.
He was right. I watched the swordsman with a stern look on his face take one more step and fall to the ground. I looked up at AJ who was now standing over the swordsman’s unconscious body. Her electric halo slowly faded away. Who in the hell was this girl?!
“What’s wrong?” She asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Erm… Nothing.” I lied.
After a while the swordsman regained consciousness. He barely told us anything about himself; just his name and where he got the katana from. His name was Ato; and he inherited the blade from his master. He however refused to tell AJ where he got the Royal Sword despite all her attempts to get the truth out of him; and that was all we knew about him. We told each other the number of points we had collected, before splitting the ones taken from the ambush team amongst ourselves.
“Fifty?! Just fifty points? How is that even possible?” I asked Ato, who seemed unconcerned and very unmotivated to answer.
“I don’t just go around fighting weak opponents; I only draw my sword against worthy adversaries. Taking just anyone’s cowries will be like trapping flies with honey, too easy.” He explained.
Well, after seeing what he was capable of; I couldn’t criticize him. AJ was clearly stronger; but she was just something else altogether. But, a part of me knew that if I was to fight the swordsman in my current state, I just might lose.
“Enough with the chit chat; we need to move to the next round.” AJ walked towards where we stood; she was already holding her cowry. “Everyone get yours.”
We did as she asked.
“What next?” I asked.
“Now we toss it into the fountain at the Whale statue.” She explained. How did she know everything? “It is written right there.” She pointed at the instructions inscribed by the fountain.
For a smart kid, you can be pretty thick at times. Kram teased. I laughed in response.
We all tossed our cowries into the fountain, which glowed a bright white light. The voice of the examiner was heard.
“We have three more candidates who have made it to the next round; with the second highest number of points, Adwoa Jameson with 390 points; Ato Kedja with 60 points, and Nana Okai with 210 points.”
It felt good knowing that I had made it through the first round successfully. Things were only going to get even more interesting from here onwards.
A white light surrounded each of us till it was all we could see. It felt as though time had frozen; like I was in a void, a void null of life. Slowly the white light started turning blue, a sudden flash of bright light blinded me. I could feel the ground beneath my feet once more, had we arrived?
“Congratulations on making it past the first round of stage one.” A familiar voice said. Slowly I recovered my sight; A lanky, tall looking man with an afro stood before me, he was in ripped skinny jeans and a black t-shirt with what looked like a painting of grass and Bob Marley? Oh, it was that kind of grass.*  I turned to realize that neither Ato nor AJ were anywhere to be found.
“I am your examiner for the First Stage, Twum.”
“Where are my teammates?” I asked Twum, who looked nothing like I’d pictured.
“Oh, you mean the other two you qualified with? So, you three formed an alliance huh? Interesting, a lot of candidates seem to be doing that this year.” He rubbed his chin, causing the beads he wore on his hands to rattle loudly. He wore similar ones around his neck too. “Not to worry; they are in the waiting room with the other qualified candidates.”
The room I was in was huge. It had only two doors at the opposite ends of it, which were very far apart. The ceiling seemed to be endless. The room had wisps of blue light that floated around and served as a source of light for the place.
“Alright, so what am I doing here?” I inquired.
He sized me up; his eyes locking on the red cap I was wearing. He laughed and rubbed his chin again.
“You know, she told me you looked like him, but I didn’t expect the resemblance to be this much.” He guffawed. He was much louder than expected, considering his looks.  “And that red cap.”
“What are you talking about?” I asked, completely confused. “How do you know me?” He stopped laughing and cleared his throat.
“I have a message from your master.” He said with all seriousness now.
“Master Kay?” I asked. What did he have to tell me? I hadn’t used Kram after all.
“No. Your other master.” He said with an intent look.
How did he know about her? Nobody was supposed to know I had a second master apart from Master Kay. Kram snarled dangerously as the man seemed to have gotten his attention. I looked around the room once more; was this some sort of trap?
“Relax, this place is secure; this room is one of my six apparitions, my own version of Nsamanpowmu. No one can hear or see us. And no one can enter or leave without my say so.” He explained, which made me even more weary. However, a part of me knew he was not lying. What could be so important that she would take such a risk.
“Alright, I’m listening.”

At the entrance of the waiting room…
I couldn’t help but be concerned about the message I had received. Who was it going to be? How many people? Was I to inform AJ and Ato? I opened the door to the waiting room, there were at least sixty candidates standing in the room. A larger number than I had expected, considering the time that had passed since the exam started. I walked around the room through the candidates looking for my team.
Did you feel that? Kram suddenly asked, alarmed.
Feel what? I asked confused.
That killing intent. It was sudden; but it was strong. He warned.
From the corner of my eye I noticed a sudden flash of red light.
What was-
I raised my arm just in time to block a kick to the head. There was a deafening crack as I felt the bone in my arm snap. Pain shot through my body as I was sent crashing into the wall.
Kid! Kid!
I couldn’t even master the will to respond. I felt a foot on my head. She wasn’t holding back at all.
“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t end you right here trash.” Her voice was cold and she meant every single word.
“I can think of three” Another female voice responded. It was AJ. She stood behind her three lightning bolts aimed at her.
“This is an Abusua Manso, stay out of it.” She warned AJ in her usual cold, uninterested tone. “I won’t repeat myself.”
A figure covered in bandages appeared behind AJ; bandages hovered around AJ snapping like serpents.
“I would listen to her if I were you?” The figure said in a muffled voice.
“Well then I’m glad we also have back up.” AJ smiled as a golden blade appeared right under the throat of the bandaged figure.
“How did you do that? I didn’t sense your presence at all; and I can sense everything.” The bandaged figure asked in a calm tone.
“I wonder what is under these bandages?” Ato asked.
“I wouldn’t dare brother.” A voice said behind Ato, a similar golden blade was placed at Ato’s throat.
“It seems we have ourselves a standoff.” AJ announced conjuring additional lightning bolts above the other two enemies, catching them by surprise. “You thought that was all?” She asked them. The other candidates all watched in shock at the events unfolding before them.
“So, Nana, who’s this conceited arrogant bitch, and why is she trying to kill you?” AJ asked.
“Your move.”

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR (Spoiler Alert!)
Hey guys! Yes, I know, I know, I’m dramatic like that. I just couldn’t resist the cliché anime standoff scene. I just had to. I might have even over stretched a little; but ah well, like a friend of mine would say, “Something must kill a man.”. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this lengthy chapter. To be honest, I started this chapter in a shitty mood (my evening wasn’t going too great), so I wasn’t really feeling it at the beginning. Especially the confrontation between Nana and AJ and the swordsman. However, I began enjoying it as time went on I must admit.
So, the first round has ended. We finally get to meet the temperamental Esi! I really love the character despite those who might support our MC and are hating on her. P.S. I even named her after my sister.
Esi’s team though! Seems to be filled with some monsters as well; we have the mummy looking guy and Ato’s brother- twin brother. Yup! I’m so hyped for what is going to happen next, and I hope you are too.
I would like to thank all my readers for supporting this series, and all the feedback I’ve been receiving, please, I welcome them! It really means a lot. Please do share this series with your friends and any reader you can think of; and do let me know what you think and if you have any questions.
P.S. the part with the * symbol was my sad attempt at establishing comic relief (sad face emoji).

Order of the WEB -15 Ch2

Fifteen years ago…

In the dungeons of the Second Vassal Chief of Elmina

She had always heard about this place, but never thought one day she’d be in one. The dungeons were specially made to nullify all senses; just an endless pit of darkness. She couldn’t even hear herself weep. The only thing that kept the once Princess sane right now was the life she harbored in her. This unborn child was her only form of hope; and the fact that she had tried to take her life while carrying this child sickened her.
You’ve got to stop crying kid; it’s becoming unbearable. A voice called.
Kram! Is that you? How are you able to communicate with me right now? She asked, her crying ceasing.
You know what I am; I am this family; I am a part of you, no dungeon can nullify me. He said in his usual low tone.  Judging from the fact that you are in here, I’m guessing you’ve still not told anyone that you’ve been able to merge with a family totem.
No, I haven’t.
You do know you’re the first of your line to do so in over 500 years right? They’d pardon you of all sins if they knew that. The last time someone was able to summon and merge with a family totem was when the Order struck. Good times, they shook the very foundation of every form of existence. He laughed.
Suddenly she could feel some of her senses restoring; she could hear her breathing; feel the ground under her feet.
Was that you? Your flame? She asked; a sad smile spreading on her face.
You can thank me when we get out of here. He responded.
I don’t plan on telling them. She said.
What?! And why are you saying that with a smile on your face? Kid, think this through. Kram was shocked by her response.
If I do tell them, they will welcome me back, even worship the very ground I walk on; but they will kill this child and his father. They will wipe any record of their existence, which includes anyone apart from the immediate family who knows about this pregnancy. They can’t have a goddess who broke taboo. She explained. I can’t let this kid die. No matter what. He has to live.
He? Kram asked.
Yeah, I think it’s a boy. I just feel it. She laughed. She felt Kram smile.
It would have been nice to get to know him. I’m sorry they’ll be taking him away. He added
Her smile faded when she was reminded of the fate that awaited her unborn child; a few more weeks, maybe two months, and this child will be born into a harsh world he did nothing to deserve. If only there was a way she could help. Maybe there was.
Maybe you can. She said.
What do you mean? Kram asked, clearly confused.
Maybe you can get to know him. She said with excitement.
Are you losing your mind kid? Because even I can’t fix that. She could picture the look on Kram’s face right now, which only made her laugh.
I’m not losing my mind.
Then what are you saying?
I want you to merge with him, my child.
WHAT?! Ok now I’m certain you’ve lost your mind! Kram shot at her. Merging is not that simple; even you with all your talent had to not just summon me, but go through the grueling process of merging to be able to become a part of me and vice versa. And you think it is possible with an unborn child? You really are crazy kid. She just laughed in response.
The most difficult part of the process has already been done; summoning you, the rest is just a simple matter of merging. She went on.
Have you forgotten how painful it was? You think a child… an unborn child can survive that level of –
Yes.
What did you say? Kram asked totally stunned.
I said yes.
There was a long silence.
I know his father; one of the strongest people I’ve ever met. And with me as his mother, this child isn’t going to be any pushover. He will survive it; trust me. This is a gamble I’m willing to take; and if he does not, that will be on me. She cried whilst still smiling.
Shit. Unbelievable, why did I ever respond to your summoning, you crazy girl. Kram let out an exasperated sigh.
She laughed as she wiped her tears. You said so yourself; you like the stubborn ones.
Look where that got me; to merge with the kid I’ll have to lose at least half of my Tumi… at least. He explained.
How do you mean? She asked.
Well since you had already mastered Tumi and already very powerful for your age; it was very easy for you to channel almost all of mine without dying or any serious damage. But in order for there to be a remote chance of successfully merging with your child, I’ll have to lose a lot of Tumi. Kram explained.
So what would happen to this excess Tumi that you have to lose?
Well, that’s where it gets tricky…
A few moments later…
I’ll ask one last time. Are you sure about this? Kram asked.
Yes. I am sure. She responded.
Alright then, here is what I haven’t told you. When I start merging with your child, which is immediately; you’ll not know whether the merge was successful or not till the day of his birth. There’s a fifty-fifty chance of success.
Sure, I was already prepared for that.
Good. Second, you won’t be able to contact me anymore. Despite the present I plan on leaving you; you and I will have no link anymore. Kram’s voice sounded different.
Wait, you mean I won’t be able to talk to you anymore? But Kram- I’m so sorry, I had no idea; I didn’t even think of it. She managed to say as she began sobbing loudly again.
Easy there kid; keep those hormones in check. Kram ordered.
But-
No buts. It’s already been decided. I hate goodbyes as it is already; don’t make it worse. He said with a low chuckle. So what are you planning on naming him?
She sniffled loudly, choking back her sobs.
Well, I thought of naming him after my father; but I don’t know how he’ll take that, so maybe after the child’s father. She said. What do you think Kram?
There was no response.
Kram? Kram? Are you still there? KRAM?!
Nothing but silence. He had left.
Her senses however were still intact. Kram’s flame still burned.
Thank you Kram; Thank you for the last five years; and thank you for now.

At that same moment in the Kakum Forest…
The forest had always been a peaceful place, but not this evening; loud crashing sounds of trees falling and explosions filled the night.
“Here I thought finding you was going to be a daunting task.” A figure with the structure of a man but made out of rock bellowed at the tall man in a red cap standing a few yards away from him.
“You must be Obour.” He responded. “She told me about you, said you were her father’s very own student; and probably the best amongst the guards. I am honoured that they sent you after me.” He flipped back avoiding a sharp rock that shot from the ground beneath him.
“The vassal chief’s very own student.” He added.
“Watch your tongue commoner! VITESSE!” Obour shouted. He suddenly disappeared, appearing behind the man.
The man quickly responded with a kick. Obour blocked the kick, grabbed him by the leg and sent him hurtling into the trees. The forest trembled as trees came crashing down loudly.
“I must say, she said you were strong; but she didn’t do you justice.” The man in the red cap said. “Well, it should be expected from the chief’s disciple. However…” He ripped off what was left of his shirt. “…don’t think I’m just some pushover you can throw around and go free.” He said turning his red cap backwards. The moon light revealed a tattoo of a spider web on his right arm.
“You are part of the Order?” Obour stared in disbelief at the tattoo.
“I’m just one of the three Abrafo of the Order.” He said, a sinister grin spreading across his face. “Now, let me show you how it is done.”
“What? You think that scares me?” Obour bellowed, pounding his chest.
“It should… VI-TE-SSE!”

At that same moment in the Vassal Chief’s palace…
“Maa, why can’t I see Aunty Bondzewaa anymore?” The young girl asked with tears in her eyes, her hair tied in a single bun. She was just a five-year-old who knew nothing about what was happening.
“Well, a bad man stole her crown from her. He left her with a baby; and because of that she can’t be a part of this family” Her mother explained playing with the girl’s hair.
“But I want to see her, I miss her!” The small girl wailed. Burying her face in her mother’s cloth.
“I know Esi, I miss her too. Every single day.” She said rubbing her daughter’s back. “When I find the man who stole her crown I’ll make him pay.” There was a dangerous look in her eyes.
“Me too.” Esi said. She had a frown on her face; her attempt to look angry only made her mother laugh. Her daughter was just too cute.
Don’t worry baby girl, she thought. I know you will.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Hey guys, once again, thanks for the support and love you’re showing this series. I’m really glad you’re enjoying Order of the Web so far. So, as you can see Order of the WEB -15 continues; the -15 basically refers to the "Fifteen years ago" flashbacks. So whenever you see Order of the WEB -15, it means we're visiting the past. Here we learn a little about Kram’s origin; the red cap’s origin, and a little Esi cameo; not to mention we begin to find out a little more about the “Order”. Despite the lengthy dialogue in this chapter, particularly enjoyed it. I think it’s safe to say this is now my favourite chapter yet.
P.S. (To our foreign readers):
Tumi: This is a local word that directly translates as power, it means more in the story; but still… the basics are similar.

Order of the WEB 3

We sped to the monument leaving a trail of dust behind; riding on a lightning was not as easy as it seemed so I had decided to go by foot. It wasn’t easy keeping up with her considering she was not only riding on pure energy, but she didn’t have to deal with constant people attacking her. I dodged, weaved and bobbed to avoid attacks both meant for me and those meant for others. I might not have liked her at the beginning, probably still didn’t, but she was a reliable person to have as a partner.

A few moments earlier…
“Hey you!”
That was the girl from my room; what the hell was she doing here. Her eyes glistened white as lightning crackled beneath her feet. Were her eyes always like that?
“I want to call a truce… What do you think about partnering up?” She asked completely ignoring the fact that there was another person right in front of me.
“Hey! I am going to kill you!” He shouted at her still trying to catch his breath. But she just went on as if he wasn’t even there.
“So, what do you say?” She asked
Well, she’s strong, partnering with her won’t be such a bad idea. Kram said.
“No.” I said as flatly as I could
“What?!”
What?!
“You cocky kid.” She said in disbelief.
Kid! You sure about this? Maybe you should think this through first.
Don’t worry Kram I know what I’m doing.
If you say so kid.
“I don’t need to partner up with you, I think I’ll do fine on my own.” I snubbed, grabbing my cap from the ground and dusting it. She was probably not used to hearing no.
“You think so? I just saved you from being dragged into Nsamanpowmu” She said with a cocky grin. “You think you don’t need me?”
“Hey! How do you know about Nsamanpowmu?” The guy I had been fighting asked, fuming with anger. He had returned to his normal state.
What were they talking about? What was Nsamanpowmu?
That explains everything. How can a mere human-
What do you mean Kram? What are they talking about?
I’ll explain everything to you later kid.
“Why me?” I asked her. She must have had a reason.
“Well, let’s just say I have a feeling about you… and by that I mean both of you, and I don’t mean that brainless tin man over there.” She said with a knowing smile on her face.
Could she mean you?
Yeah. That girl must have the eye.
What eye? I asked.
The eye of Okomfo Anokye.
But how is that possible?
I don’t know kid, but you’ll have to partner up with her if you want to know.
“Alright, but if I feel you are working an angle; we will kill you.” I warned her.
“Oooh… I actually believe you. Though I’d still love to see how that goes; for both of us” She responded. I could have sworn I saw a flash of lightning in her eyes.
“So, shall-“ She was interrupted by the descendant of the Royal Guard family.
“Hey! Don’t act like I’m not here- I’m talking to you bitch!” He shouted hauling a slab of concrete from the rubble at her.
“WHAT – DID – YOU – CALL – ME?!” She screamed catching the rubble with one hand which disintegrated at just her touch. Lightning crackled around her crazily.

Now…
We had gained some extra cowries on our way to the monument. I had exactly 190 points right now, she had 370. We had made it past the place you could call a battlefield, there was barely anyone where we were at the moment. We had to get to get to the monument and quickly.
She descended from the skies and ran by my side, she was still fast on land. Each step she took her feet sparked with electricity.
“We should be there soon.”
“Alright.” I was getting excited, I couldn’t wait to make it to the next round.
“There will probably be an ambush waiting for us there.” She said, not falling behind by even a single pace.
“An ambush?”
“Yes. Think about it, instead of fighting where everyone else is, why not wait patiently at the monument for them to come to you; that way there’s a less chance of losing your cowries.” She explained. It made sense; it was a solid plan.
“But isn’t it risky; those who make it to the monument won’t be pushovers. Considering they survived to that point. Case in point.” I said pointing at her.
“Flattery? I underestimated you kid. But you’re right. It could only mean one thing; they will not be any pushovers either.” She was serious this time. Then a smile crept on her face.
“What is it?” I had to know.
“You will fight them.” She said without hesitation.
“What?”
“Yes, I want to see what you are capable of.” She looked at me and winked.
“I already told you I’m not using Kram till the Third Stage.” I shook my head.
“I would be disappointed if you did; I want to see what you are capable of… on your own.” She was persistent. “I saw you use a move earlier on when you took out those annoying spear users and that uncompleted building; it looked like Vitesse, was I right?”
“Yes, it was.” I answered. She smiled and looked ahead.
“How do you know that technique, no mere candidate can pull that off; only title holders and those with affiliations to a royal family know of it and can successfully pull it off.”
“Well, seems you are affiliated to a royal family in some way; based on your own words.” I smiled
“Look who grew smart…“ She chuckled and sped up. “Though I noticed it is far from perfect.” She added
She was right. The average Vitesse had to be at Mach speed at the very least; anything less before an opponent who has mastered it was practically useless.
“I want you to defeat them using Vitesse. If you can do that, this partnership will be well secured.” She looked at me. “Do we have a deal?”
I thought about it for a while.
She does raise a good point kid. That’s the only way you can improve. If you can’t do this without, you aren’t worthy of me, or even being here.
Kram’s words did burn a little, but he was right; and I was sure master knew same that’s why he asked me to refrain from using Kram.
“Deal.” I responded.
“Awesome. We are here; let’s see what you’ve got.”
I went on and sped up leaving her behind; I was sure she had gone back into the skies to observe everything.
The monument came into view; The Monument of Three. The monument that honoured the founders of the Fante land. The Elephant, The Whale and The Hawk.
She was right an ambush waited for us, there were four-no- five of them. One spear user was hiding at least a few hundred yards away; he must be very good.
They seem to have been ready for me. I stopped and surveyed the place again, I felt another presence, I was sure of it. It wasn’t clear but I couldn’t shake of the uneasy feeling of there being a sixth person; as to whether he or she was part of this team, I wasn’t sure.
The four people in front of me looked strong and consisted mostly of weapon wielders. Two sword users and one spear user. I had heard of spear users who were as proficient in close combat as a sword user; maybe he was one. The fourth person didn’t have any weapon on her; at least not one that was visible.
The spear user stepped forward, he was huge. At least twice my height and three times my size. What do they feed him?
“We can do this the easy way; just give us your cowries and get out of here.” He commanded. “However, if you insist on not surrendering, we can’t guarantee your life.”
I didn’t have time for this; I could feel her impatience through the static in the air. I guess he’ll have to go down first. It was time to use all that I had been taught by my master. Bigger opponents can be harder to put down, but not if you know where and how to hit.
Vitesse!
It might not be up to Mach speed, but it was faster than the untrained eye could keep up with. Two sharp jabs behind each knee. Destroy their foundation. Followed by three sharp ones to the temple.
I landed behind him before his body fell to the ground. His fellow team mates had their eyes wide open; probably wondering what had happened during the time they had blinked.
They charged at me, all three of them; they were probably from the same arena as they attacked in a formation. The two male sword users flanked my sides, creating a line of attack for their female partner. It was a good formation since the only way to go was back now that all sides were blocked; which was the original plan. It would have worked against the average opponent; I might not have been as strong as Esi or the lightning user, but I was far from average. And the fact that they were underestimating me pissed me off.
Vitesse!
I lunged at my attacker from the left; just when I was centimetres away from him, I ducked and punched him square in the chin, sending him flying. I felt a crack; without wasting time I propelled myself to the right and landed behind the second sword user, a quick roundhouse kick to his temple sent him hurtling in the opposite direction.
The female attacker in their group stood there in shock. I could see her hands trembling. She suddenly regained her composure and yelled.
“Get him!”
It was a signal to the spear user, I hadn’t forgotten about him; as a matter of fact, I was waiting on him to attack. He was far, which even meant he was probably better than the spear user I encountered earlier. Where was he attacking from…? There! The north-east. He was good; but my master was a far better spear user.
I dashed towards where the spear was coming from. They all probably thought I was crazy; heading for the spear. I saw it clearly, the force behind I was impressive.
Kram! Have you ever wondered what happens if you apply Vitesse on a flying projectile?
You are crazy kid. Kram laughed.
Well, with the master I had, it’s only normal if I am. I couldn’t help but smile.
I stepped on the spear, and spun it with a light tap to the side using my feet. Vitesse! I kicked it back the direction it came from. I landed and watched it disappear into the trees. There was a loud crashing sound, then followed by the rising of dust.
Why didn’t you try this earlier?
Well, I had to meet the right opponent first.
I turned in time to see a screaming girl with twin daggers charging at me. I nearly forgot about her in all the excitement.
“You monster!” She screamed. If only she’d calmed down, she’d be a troublesome opponent; but all her attacks were too wide and obvious due to her frenzied state.
I had to end this now. I didn’t want to hurt her like I did the rest. I knew what it was like to be in her shoes all too well.
Heart Strike!
Her movements froze. She looked at me wide eyed probably wondering what I’d done to make her freeze. I had wondered same when master used it on me the first time.
“You think I’m a monster? Then give up now. Compared to those two ladies, I am nothing. That lightning user showed me that. However, the choice is yours to make. I will take the cowries of your teammates, but I’ll let you keep the ones you have. We all signed up or this after all.”
I walked toward the monument to meet the lightning user waiting for me. She had a huge grin on her face.
“Wow. You are definitely good; better than I might have considered. I think I can tell you my name now; Adwoa Jameson; but you can call me AJ. And your name?” She asked
“Okai, Nana Okai.” I replied.
“Well, now I know the names of who I’m fighting next.” A voice said from behind us.

Somewhere far away and hidden…
“Did you feel that? The strands are trembling with excitement. There’s a new story unfolding. It has been five hundred years since someone worthy showed up. Let the order know things are about to get interesting. There’s a new story to collect; a new tale to tell.” He laughed as he got up from his throne. The stray light showed a tattoo that covered his entire body; the tattoo of a web. “Make that three tales… good! It’s about darn time!”

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Hi guys, so this is by far the longest chapter yet. It has its fair share of clichés I will admit; but I honestly did enjoy typing it regardless. So we finally get the name of our MC in this chapter. It took too long, but I was trying to find a way to bring in his name such that it flows naturally; I either achieved that here or I Just gave up. I must say thank you to all those supporting the Order of the WEB. I really appreciate your support; and I hope I continue to provide you with even greater content as we go on.
I must admit I particularly enjoyed the ending of this chapter, a lot! I finally got to introduce my favourite character. I am brimming with excitement. I am wondering what the continuation will be about… And what did he mean by three tales? Ah well; we’ll just have to wait and see I guess.

Order of the Web -15

Fifteen years ago…

In the Second Elmina vassal chief’s palace

The throne room was a sight to behold. Its pillars made out gold, ivory and the finest of Kakum wood. Ancient weapons hung on the walls; an embroidery of the family totem, the Lava Hound hang behind the two thrones at the very far end of the building. In the golden throne was an extremely built elderly man in Kente cloth; his head was fully shaved and his grey beard and eyebrows were the only visible hairs on his face. Golden amulets hung from his neck and on his arm; his feet in the finest of ahenma. Beside him sat an elderly yet extremely beautiful lady also clad in Kente cloth; she had a stern expression on her face. In front of them knelt a very pregnant looking lady in her late teens to early twenties.
“You are a disgrace to this family! We send you off to the Ashanti arena and you come back with a pregnancy? Is that why we sent you there?!” The Elmina vassal chief bellowed at his daughter who knelt before his throne weeping bitterly. The queen mother sat in her throne, not a trace of emotion on her face; as cold as ice.
“F- father, I am so sorry. I can explain -” His daughter managed in between sobs.
“Explain?! You really think any amount of explanation will make up for this abomination you carry in you?” He stood from his throne and paced the large hall. “You didn’t even have the decency to carry the child of a royal; it had to be a lowly commoner!” He took a step towards her and with an angry expression on his face raise his hand to hit her.
“Don’t.” The elderly woman in the throne said, her expression unchanging.
“What do you mean “don’t” this stupid girl brings dishonour onto our family name and you dare to stop me from disciplining her?” He raged. She rose from her seat and walked towards where the chief stood; placing a hand on his arm.
“You are the chief of this land; the elder of your bloodline, I didn’t ask you to stop in the defence of this silly child. I only said that to prevent you from staining your hands with this filth!” She spat.
“Mother-“
“Do not call me mother.” She slapped her daughter across the face sharply. “You dare to call me mother after what you did? My daughter would not break taboo like that? My daughter was not raised to be a harlot! You are not my daughter. Do not ever call me mother unless you’re prepared to lose your tongue” The wife of the chief returned to her throne, leaving her husband still standing in front of their weeping daughter. “Why couldn’t you be like your elder sister; married royalty, and gave us Esi.” She said as she sat on her throne.
“You have brought shame upon our family. You shall be stripped of your royal name and status. No longer shall you be Bondzewaa; you are not worthy of the queen mother’s name anymore. You shall reside in this palace but not as royalty anymore, you shall work to earn your keep. You will be allowed to carry that child in you till it is due, and after you deliver that baby, it shall be taking from this palace immediately to work as a slave in the arena.”
“Father! Please don’t-“ She tried to protest.
“You dare interrupt your chief whilst he speaks?!” The chief’s wife, her mother, cut her off. A sudden blast of cool dry harmattan wind blew through the sealed throne room. The girl shut up immediately, trying her best to hold back her sobs.
“Calm down my dear.” The chief said to his wife in a calm soothing voice, a disturbed look on his face. Slowly the room returned to its normal state as his wife calmed down.
“Because of your constant pleading and stupid attempts to take your own life, we will not find and wipe the mongrel who did this to you out of existence, but don’t think you’ll be allowed to keep or raise that thing you are carrying. Find solace in the fact that all three of you shall be left alive.” He walked to his throne, sat down and let out a loud sigh. “Guards!”
Two large men, with a skin and body of steel materialized in front of the chief on their knees.
“Speak your heart’s desire and it shall be yours, let us perish if not. Command us chief.”
“Take her back to her cell.” He commanded
They marched to where he former princess was kneeling. With one hand each on her shoulder they materialized away in black smoke.
“I shall head to my chambers now. I need to rest before it’s time for Esi’s training.” The chief said as he walked out of the room. The heavy steel doors opened and gradually closed behind him.
The chief walked past his subjects as he headed for his chambers; too lost in his thoughts to even notice their curtseys. As he got to the dark corridor which led to his room he stopped. This was one of the few places in the palace no one was allowed to wonder.
“Obuor.”
A face formed from the stone wall that made the corridor.
“Speak my chief.” The face said in a deep growl.
“Find that fool who dared did this to my daughter and make him pay; make sure he suffers a hell like none other.” The spat with a scorn on his face.
“Yes, my chief. When I’m through with him, death will be like a calabash of palm wine to a drunk.”
“Good.”

The chief’s wife sat quietly and alone in the throne room. She broke down in tears as her pent up emotions could no longer be hidden. The room turned dry and cold, as though the harmattan season had just started. The more she wept the colder the room got. Wooden chairs and other items made of wood began to wither under the intense dryness.
Why did she have to make such a mistake? Why a commoner? Why her own daughter? Why did she even agree to send her to the Ashanti arena? These questions plagued her mind as she wept; a side of her no one ever saw, not even her own husband. The chief’s wife had no business crying; but today she did.

To be continued…

NOTE FOM THE AUTHOR [SPOILER ALERT (S.A)]
Hey guys, thanks so much for enjoying the first instalment of Order of the Web. I really appreciated the feedback and the support. I know it was far from perfect, but you still read anyway, and that means a lot to me. I’ll do everything I can to make I better with each post. So, I was actually working on two different posts at the same time; one in the present, a direct continuation to the previous “chapter”. And one in the past (what you just read); I was planning on releasing the two at the same time, but after hearing someone I’ve not even met saying they’re a fan of my work I just had to at least give you something to read (this chapter is dedicated to you [hope this finds you]).
More about this chapter; it is a sort of origin story (in a way). Will be going back a couple of years to fill in some blanks and try my best to explain any misunderstandings or answer any questions that might be bothering you concerning our character in the present. In other words, be expecting one part that tells the story in the present timeline = the tests; and one that tells the story in the past timeline = the vassal chief’s family. (S.A) You would notice the mention of Esi in the “throwback”, so you can probably guess who the unborn child is.

P.S.
Key (some words explained for our foreign readers)
Ahenma = Royal slippers, commonly worn with the Kente cloth
Kakum = A popular forest in Cape Coast, Elmina
Kente = A special expensive Ghanaian woven cloth, mostly worn for special occasions or by royalty.

…winging it…

Yours faithfully,
EverydayGladiator (S.A.A)
